Wage Disparity

Following are the wage scales of employees represented by the APWU and NALC.   Throughout postal history, Distribution Clerks and City Letter Carriers were classified in the same pay grade.  The Letter Carriers achieved an upgrade in arbitration that was followed by negotiated upgrades for all APWU represented employees in 2006.

The chart below reflects the difference that have developed over recent years and shows that those delivering mail are now being compensated at a higher level than those employees who distribute it.  In past years, the salary difference was offset by night differential and Sunday premium paid to most clerks in mail processing whose schedules included covered hours.  Now for the first time in the history of the Postal Service, there is a clear difference in the salaries paid to the two classifications of employees.

This is not a fair comparison of yearly earnings for the carriers and night differential for the APWU crafts.
